Why Digital Talent Doesn’t Want To Work At Your Company | Fast Company

Why Digital Talent Doesn’t Want To Work At Your Company | Fast Company:

Your offices are cold, impersonal and downright stodgy. It may sound like it conflicts with the “you don’t need to be in Silicon Valley point,” but appreciate the nuance. A traditional office layout is designed to communicate power among certain individuals and barriers between departments. This does not support the collaborative ethos which is intrinsic to the web. Companies should do everything possible to provide the digital team friendlier, open office space. A location in a hip, young neighborhood (which surely exists in every mid- to large-sized city) is also a big plus.

Rabobank Headquarter

Rabobank seems to be quite a modern employer. The new headquarter is adapted to the changes in work processes.
In today’s work environment, the emphasis is on cooperation in teams and group dynamics; people go to the office for the social aspect more than anything else. To realize this ambition, we view the building as a modern city. After all, the city is where individual freedom and spontaneous interaction are all-important.
...
The new style of working is based on freedom, trust and taking responsibility. In the client’s view, its employees are all entrepreneurs, responsible for their own performance in an environment free of fixed rules, fixed times and fixed locations. The work spaces are tailored to specific activities: multi-person meetings, face-to-face meetings or a place to write a report with maximum concentration. Each activity has its own space.

I think what is most interesting, is the fact that there are different activities in jobs or days. There is a conflict between freedom, exchange and social activities vs. concentrated work and fighting against distraction.
